[UC15] Utility Data Challenge Hub

Multipurpose Data Analytics

Data challenges call for submitting innovative solutions to real-world utility problems. Streamlining the data collection & aggregation process provides credibility to the utilities making the call for submissions and allowing them to attract higher-quality challenge participants resulting in optimized solutions.

The Utility Problem

Data challenges call for submitting innovative solutions to real-world utility problems from the public, academia or technology providers. The process involves refining a wide range of datasets to obtain a solution. A Data Challenge will typically go as follows:

  1. Utility publishes a real-world problem that processing data can solve.
  2. Utility informs challenge participants about intended datasets, often with a short description.
  3. Data challenge participants submit their ideas for solving the challenge.
  4. Utility shortlists participants, so finalists get an opportunity to solve the challenge.
  5. The solutions are evaluated, and the winners are announced!

Streamlining the data collection & aggregation process can provide credibility to the utilities making the call for submissions and allow them to attract higher-quality challenge participants resulting in optimized solutions. The Awesense Energy Transition Platform and its Energy Data Model (EDM) interface are proven tools for addressing many utility use cases. The data can be integrated, cleansed, and structured according to the EDM. At the same time, participants get a headstart developing their solutions within the platform’s sandbox environment before testing them with the processed data via APIs.
