[UC26] Transformer Loading Analysis

Asset Management

Analyze transformer loading patterns and health across all transformers in the service territory.

The Utility Problem

A transformer is a non-rotating electrical machine that enables the transfer of electrical energy from one circuit to another through electromagnetic induction. Each utility company has a significant number of transformers in their portfolio, which form a significant portion of their overall assets. To manage this important portfolio, utilities have developed asset management techniques that range from simple to advanced. One of the more advanced techniques is Transformer Loading Analysis, which takes into consideration dynamic variables during operation.

It is important to monitor how a transformer is loaded over time for safety reasons. If the transformer is overloaded for a long period, it can shorten the transformer’s lifetime and cause failures, negatively affecting the utility’s reliability indicators. On the other hand, if the transformer is underutilized, it can be an inefficient use of investment funds and result in higher no-load losses.

Conducting regular Transformer Loading Analysis can bring multiple benefits in the form of improved decision-making in asset management and overall grid operations management. Overall, transformer is the key element in electricity distribution and managing them efficiently, helps maintain grid reliability, reducing energy losses and protecting the investment.
