[UC27] IoT Sensor Billing

Billing
Revenue Protection

Utilize alternative sensors located in the grid for customer billing purposes where metering data is not reliable or not possible.

The Utility Problem

As with any other commodity for which it is necessary to pay, electricity is no different. The energy measurement, quantification and payment calculation process in the electricity distribution business is called billing. In utilities, the role of measurement is always executed by the utility meter, whose primary function is to measure and register the values used for energy billing.

However, for many reasons and specific scenarios, energy meters might not be available to provide sufficient data for energy billing. In these cases, utilities usually utilize alternative methods of measuring electricity for billing purposes. The most common way is the deployment of IoT grid sensors which are capable of energy measurement.

These (often portable) IoT grid sensors offer quick and easy deployment at the desired grid location. After deployment, they substitute the role of the energy metering device, which might be missing or malfunctioning. Measured data from these IoT sensors can then be transferred to the utility billing system, or separate bills can be created using the IoT-measured data.
